Scarlet and Black Monogram

Scarlet and Black Monogram E

Scarlet and Black Monogram E

Black and white with a luscious curly scarlet E seemed the right sort of embroidered initial for someone fond of wearing sharp tailored clothes in monochromes and a slash of brilliantly red lipstick.

I’ve long had this cutting in my album and knew it would be inspirational sometime. I’d rather like to make a jacket with such roughly appliquéd brocade like shapes and perhaps I will one day. Meanwhile it was fun to experiment with a monogram.

The black brocading is raw silk on top of which I’ve used red embroidery cotton of an unknown shade which was languishing minus shade detail in my workbox. Too good a colour to ignore, I couldn’t resist using it and ploughed on hoping there would be enough to finish it. There was. The black shape was attached with concentric running stitches to the white linen base and once that was finished I embroidered the initial in satin stitch padded with pure wool felt. The edge of the black fabric has been left raw and slightly fraying (as in the red on white outfit above) which contrasts with the firm edge of the initial. I made this monogram for someone my daughter works with and I’m hoping I’ve not been wildly wrong in judging her taste.

I like this very much! I hope your daughter’s friend will too. Gives a modern vibe to the embroidery.

This demonstrates perfectly how a traditional skill can be instantly brought up to the minute. So dramatic, and I love the slightly raggedy edge. Really lovely x
